Steps to Draw Optimus Prime
Here is a short preview of today’s tutorial. We’ll start with the helmet, then build the arms, chest, and legs, finishing with the final details. Follow us step by step to draw Optimus Prime easily.

Step 1: Start with the top of the helmet

Draw a small angled “L” shape — this forms the top corner of the headgear. Then, just below that, draw a wide hexagon-like shape to create the central faceplate of Optimus Prime’s helmet.
Step 2: Add helmet side panel

From the hexagon-like shape, connect to the L-shape on the left side for the side panel of the helmet, as shown in the image above.
Step 3: Sketch right-side panel

Repeat the previous step by drawing two clean lines with a small gap between them to form the right-side panel of the helmet. Make sure it is placed slightly curved as shown in the image for perfect placement.
Step 4: Add the top of the Helmet

At the very top, draw a slightly curved horizontal line connecting both sides. This will complete the top portion of Optimus Prime’s helmet, giving it a solid look.
Step 5: Draw the antennae

Add two vertical lines on the left side of the helmet to form the antenna. These tall, narrow shapes are iconic features of Optimus Prime’s head design.
Step 6: Right Antennae

Following the same step, sketch the right antenna, slightly curved towards the left, as shown in the picture above to give Prime’s helmet a good structure.
Step 7: Add the eyes and helmet details

Inside the faceplate, draw two sharp eyes. Make it a polygon shape as shown. Along with the sketch of the eye, draw the same shape on the top of the helmet to create a look.
Step 8: Begin drawing the left Rectangle

From the left of the head, sketch a rectangle shape that will become the upper part of the character’s outfit. This step will later help us completely draw the body part of the character.
Step 9: Sketch the right Rectangle

From the right side, sketch a rectangle connecting the left one for the upper part of the character’s body along with the outfit.
Step 10: Design the Left Shoulder

Connecting the rectangle we drew in the above step, sketch the cylinder-like shape to represent the shoulder of the character.
Step 11: Draw a left fist

Sketch a square-shaped fist connected to the shoulder. Along with drawing the fist, sketch a double line in both rectangles for the bold look as shown in the image above.
Step 12: Design the Energon sword

In the left fist, attach a rectangular shape to represent Optimus Prime holding his Energon sword. We kept the sword design simple for clarity.
Step 13: Complete Sketching the Weapon

Add a small, imperfect square over the rectangle’s top edge, skewed slightly left for a dynamic look of Prime’s weapon.
Step 14: Sketch Right Shoulder

Draw the right shoulder as a blocky, rectangular shape connected to the body. Angle it slightly outward to show perspective.
Step 15: Upper Part of the Right Side Body

Draw the upper part of the robot’s right side body. Use a rectangular shape that slightly angles toward the center to give it a 3D look. Keep your lines clean to later complete the whole body shape of the character.
Step 16: Left Side Body

Start by drawing a large vertical panel on the left side of the body. This is the main part of the chest on that side. Then, add several angled and straight lines inside this area to show different armour layers and panel segments.
Step 17: Start the waist section

Beneath the upper part of the body, draw a rectangle to serve as the top of the waist. Connecting to the waist, draw a small curve like the corner of it, as given in the image.
Step 18: Add details

Draw more small squares and lines to fill out the mechanical parts at the waist area. This will give a solid structure to the character.
Step 19: Draw the Upper Part of the Legs

Sketch a thick rectangular shape extending downward to form the left side. Repeat on the right side to complete the upper legs.
Step 20: Add lower left leg and foot

Now draw the lower half of the leg, finishing it with a large, angled boot-like foot. Start with the squares, and lines to map out proportions, then connect and refine them into the shape of the foot.
Step 21: Draw the lower right leg and foot

Following the same step above, finish drawing the right side leg with the same process. Then, to make a boot-like foot, you slightly need to make a different shape as it is forwarded towards the right side. If you are confused by the guide, follow the image shared above and make the foot look clean.
Step 22: Detail both legs

Add mechanical detailing, including lines and panels to make the legs look robotic. Follow the image given and give a solid look to the character.
Step 23: Add finishing touches

Sketch extra lines and parts on the arms, fists, ears, and helmet ridges to complete the tech-style design. Finally, this will complete the part of sketching. Before moving to the next process, clean extra lines and refine your sketching followed by the referenced image.
For a polished, bold finish, carefully apply color using the techniques we’ve outlined below. Move forward to the next step.
Coloring the Optimus Prime
Now that your drawing is finished, it’s time to add color and make Optimus Prime look amazing! Begin with navy blue colors on his helmet and his arms together with his legs. The upper part of the chest needs to be painted with brilliant red together with his shoulder region. The faceplate together with the grill should be grey or silver, while the added light blue color for chest windows. The bright blue luminescence of his eyes never should be overlooked. Finally, apply grey paint to the waist joints to give depth to your artwork. A slight yellow color has also been used in the waist along with navy blue at the centre.
Color Details:
- Navy Blue
- Light Blue
- Red

- Yellow

Now our coloring is finished, capturing Optimus Prime’s iconic look with his signature colors. If you want your sketch to have a bold look, you can complete it by outlining it with a black marker; it will help your drawing stand out. We’ve used colored pencils for this artwork, but feel free to experiment with watercolors or crayons if you prefer.
