A leaf is a flat, green part of a plant that grows from a stem or twig. In today’s drawing lesson, we will be drawing a common leaf. We will start with the simple outline and break the leaf drawing into small steps that will be easier to learn.
Leaves are the main site of photosynthesis, which is how plants make their food. We share a basic leaf drawing lesson. This will be a very fun drawing class as we break a tutorial into very small steps which makes drawing a basic leaf easier for both beginners and kids too.

Steps To Draw A Leaf
Take out your paper, pencil and black marker and let’s dive into today’s drawing lessons. Here is a short preview of our today’s drawing guide. We will start with the leaf midrib and complete it with coloring. You can even use this leaf on the plant or tree drawing too.

Step 1: Draw Midrib

Let’s start by sketching the midrib of the leaf. Just sketch a curved line to make a midrib of a leaf. We are using a black marker but for beginners, we prefer to use a pencil.
Step 2: Sketch Petiole

Now from the end of the curve line we sketch on step 1, just add another curve line to complete our petiole of the leaf.
Step 3: Draw Leaf Blade

At first, we need to make a leaf tip pointed so from the top of the curve line just draw a curve line to form the leaf blade on the left side. Finally, join the line to the midrib to make the leaf vein.
Step 4: Draw Leaf Base

Let’s add a realistic look to our drawing, we use our creativity to our leaf, we tear the leaf at the left side just to make it real. Draw a curved line to show the vein of the leaf and make sure you leave the gap in between to make a tearing texture of the leaf and finally join the line forming a leaf base.
Step 5: Draw Right Leaf Blade

Now, from the tip of the leaf just sketch a curved line to the bottom to make a right side leaf blade. Make it slightly thicker at the base for realism. Wow, within a few steps, we can see our leaf coming to real life. For beginners, we suggest practising more to draw perfect curve lines as all tutorial is based on it.
Step 6: Add Four Veins On Left Side

Then, from the midrib on the left side, draw small curved lines to form the four veins of the leaf. We are almost at the end of this lesson. It’s one of the easy tutorials.
Step 7: Add Five Veins On the Right Side

Finally, sketched small curved lines on the right side of the leaf to make a five vein of our leaf. Wow, it was fun drawing a leaf. We have completed our drawing now and you can see we have a beautiful common leaf. Let’s color it.
Coloring a Leaf
After finishing the drawing, we wanted to add some colors that would bring it to life and make it more enjoyable. As leaves are generally green in color, we have used a common dark green color for our leaf.
We colored dark green on the leaf blade and green on the midrib.
Color Details:
- Dark Green
- Green

Our realistic leaf is ready. We colored it digitally but you can color it using a pencil color or water color.
