Steps To Draw A Whale
Whales are large marine mammals with streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies and a layer of blubber. Their colors range from black and gray to white and bluish-gray, with some species featuring distinctive patterns or markings. They can be up to 100 feet long.
We also have a video tutorial above. You can either follow our video tutorial or the stewise guide below. Here is a brief preview of the steps.
Step 1: Draw Rough Sketches
Begin by sketching a rough circle as depicted in the image above. We use a pencil for this step as the circle is intended for reference and we’ll be erasing it in subsequent steps.
Step 2: Draw Rough Whale Body Structure
Next, sketch two lines to outline the whale’s body as illustrated in the image above. Again use a pencil to draw the curves roughly as they are only for reference purposes. These lines will be erased in subsequent steps.
Step 3: Draw Upper Outline Fairly
Now proceed by drawing the upper outline more precisely referring to the rough lines drawn in steps 1 and 2 as a guide. Now use a marker or pen for this step.
Step 4: Draw Mouth
Next, draw the whale mouth at the lower part of the circle, forming a smiley face, using the reference lines as shown in the image above.
Step 5: Outline Lower Body
Subsequently, sketch the lower body outline of the whale by following the rough curve lines drawn earlier.
Step 6: Draw Whale Tail
Now, outline half of the whale tail creating a slightly pointed end as demonstrated in the image above.
Step 7: Complete Whale Tail
Now, complete the whale tail, ensuring a slightly pointed end as shown in the image above.
Step 8: Draw Whale Flippers
Now draw the flippers or fins of the whale on both sides, ensuring one flipper is longer and the other shorter.
Step 9: Draw a Rough Sketch Of a Blowhole
Here we are depicting the water flowing from the blowhole. First, draw a small circle to make a blowhole on the whale’s head and roughly draw a branch like structure and some circles.
Step 10: Draw an Outline of Blowhole
Afterwards, outline the blow by referencing the rough lines drawn in the previous step.
Step 11: Draw Water Droplets
Next, draw water droplets around the blowhole by using the reference lines as a guide.
Step 12: Erase Rough Lines
Now erase all the rough lines drawn in different steps for reference. Now we have finalized the drawing of the whale and its blowhole.
Step 13: Draw Ventral Pleats
Now, add ventral pleats to the lower part of the whale by drawing six curvy lines.
Step 14: Draw Whale Cute Eye
Then, draw a circular cute whale’s eye and eyebrow. Finally, we have completed the drawing of our cute whale.
Coloring a Whale
After completing the whale drawing, let’s proceed with coloring. We have selected some basic colors for the whale.
We use light blue color for the blowhole, dark blue for the body of the whale, and a touch of light blue for the ventral pleats. Feel free to choose colors as you like.
Color Details:
- Dark Blue
- Light Blue
After coloring, we get a realistic blue whale. You can use a pencil color (we made it digital).
