Steps To Draw A Unicorn
You can find a brief guide in the image below for today’s drawing. Follow the steps below one by one to draw a unicorn step by step.
Step 1: Sketch Rough Oval
Start by sketching a rough oval for the body shape of a unicorn. You can use a compass or just roughly draw it.
Step 2: Overlapping Oval
Next, draw an oval, overlapping the first one, to make a head. These are the reference lines that will be used in further steps.
Outline the half oval for the head, as shown in the picture above. We use a black marker for outlining. Make sure to use a pen or marker for a cleaner look.
Step 3: Sketch the Legs
Then, draw two parallel lines just below the head. Circle the tip of the line to make it look like unicorn cloven hooves. Make sure the left leg is thinner than the right one.
Step 4: Complete Drawing Legs
Again, draw a parallel line and add a circle for cloven hooves to make the legs backwards. Then, connect the lines to make the body of the unicorn.
Step 5: Draw the Ear
On top of the head, draw one small, pointed ear; somehow it looks like the shape of the leaf. Next, make a C-shaped connection for the ear to create the hair of the creature.
Step 6: Sketch the Horn
In between the ears, outline a tall, narrow cone for the horn. Add some lines inside it to make it look natural. You can take a look at the picture above for a better guide.
Step 7: Add Outline To Draw Mane
After that, draw wavy lines starting from the top of the head and slowly going downward to the back of the neck.
Step 8: Complete Sketching Mane
Inside the outline of the unicorn’s mane, add two extra lines to show it flowing or moving. This will make it look more dynamic and natural.
Step 9: Draw a Tail
As with outlining the mane from the step above, draw a curvy shape from the back side of the body to make the tail.
Step 10: Complete Sketching the Tail
Extend wavy lines outward to illustrate a fluffy tail. Then, add a little heart on the back side, near the tail.
Step 11: Erase The Extra Lines
Erase all the rough lines or extra lines in the drawing that we drew for the references. This step will help us to get a clear drawing. If you get confused, look at the picture and follow the guide.
Step 12: Add Facial Features
Draw a half-circle for the eye, then add a touch of eyelashes to it. Then, add a small curve line for a smile. In the middle of the eye and mouth, just add a small dot to represent the nose.
Then add one tiny circle in the head and two other tiny circles in the tail. These circles will add a bit of detail to the head and tail of the unicorn.
Step 13: Complete With A Cloud
Finally, to complete your drawing, add a cloud shape beneath the unicorn. This creates a scene that the unicorn is above the clouds and adds value to our sketch.
Now that we’ve finished drawing the unicorn, if you’d like to add some color, here are the steps to follow:
Coloring a Unicorn
After finishing the drawing, we wanted to add some colors that would bring it to life and make it more enjoyable. Here, we have used very basic colors; if you want to add a different set of colors, you can fill it with your choice.
Color Details:
- Pink
- Light Yellow
- Light blue
- Yellow
- Purple
- Light Pink
Firstly, we have used a light blue color for the cloud and in some parts of the mane. Then, you can find a light pink color on the half side of the tail, on the blush, and on the half side of the mane. We have used a darker shade of pink in the other half of the mane, a heart, and the hair. Finally, we have used yellow for the horn and light yellow for the final mane.
Our pretty unicorn is ready with a smiley face. We hope you can draw a unicorn with our easy steps (we created a digital version).
