A snowflake is a single ice crystal that falls through the Earth’s atmosphere as snow. They are formed in clouds when water vapor condenses directly into ice, bypassing the liquid state. Learn to draw a snowflake in easy steps today with our simple guide.
As they fall through the atmosphere, snowflakes encounter varying temperatures and humidity levels, which influence their intricate and unique patterns. Snowflakes are often associated with winter and are a common symbol of cold weather and the holiday season. We will follow the natural look and start drawing a snowflake. Let’s follow the tutorial given below.

Steps To Draw A Snowflake Step By Step
We can begin drawing a snowflake from a basic shape. A snowflake typically has six branches radiating from a central point, forming a symmetrical pattern. While, the shape of a snowflake is determined by the temperature and humidity of the cloud where it forms. In today’s tutorial, we’ll use a simple outline and add details to bring this unique snowflake to life.
Step 1: Sketch a Circle
Start with the shape of the circle. You can use the compass for the perfect shape. This will serve as the base shape for your snowflake and help us to complete the drawing easily.
Step 2: Divide the Circle
Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the circle. And also vertically from the middle for perfect division. This line will guide the placement of the snowflake’s arms.
Step 3: Draw Diagonal Lines
Draw two diagonal lines crossing the center of the circle. These lines should be evenly spaced between the horizontal and vertical lines, dividing the circle into eight equal sections.
Step 4: Sketch the First Arm of the Snowflake
Starting from the center, draw a straight line up to the edge of the circle following one of the guidelines. Then, thicken the line to give the snowflake a solid arm. Take a reference from the image placed above for a perfect drawing.
Step 5: Add Arms on The Left Side
Repeat the previous step along all the guidelines, creating total arms on the left side. Make each arm even for the clear and natural look of each one.
Step 6: Complete Drawing The Arms
Using the same steps for drawing the arms shown on the left side, complete the drawing on the right side by following the same guide precisely. This will complete almost half the look of the snowflake.
Step 7: Draw The Branches
Start drawing the branches from the top and bottom shapes. Sketch the small V-shaped branches that point outward as shown in the image. Make sure to draw the branches with double-bold lines.
Step 8: Add Another Two Branches
As shown in the image above, draw two branches following the same previous steps. Make sure all of the branches are evenly made for a natural look.
Step 9: Complete Drawing The Branches
Follow the previous step and complete drawing branches to each arm. Extend the small V-shaped branches outward from the top and bottom shapes, ensuring they are bold and consistent.
Step 10: Erase The Circle
Just leave the drawing of the snowflake; erasing the circle and unnecessary lines carefully without messing up any drawing to have a perfect look. And there you have it—a beautiful snowflake!
This step will finalise our drawing and prepare us to begin the coloring process. Let’s start the coloring process.
Coloring The Snowflake
Once you’ve finished drawing the snowflake, move on to coloring it. We’ve used some basic colors for reference, but you can choose any colors you like to fill in your snowflake.
We used a light blue for the snowflake’s main parts and a slightly darker blue for the shadowed areas or you can just simply add a light blue color all over. For added detail, you can use white or a light gray to highlight and for more texture.
Color Details:
- Light Blue
After adding color, you’ll end up with a beautifully finished snowflake. The highlights make it look like it’s glowing, bringing the artwork to life. Hope u had fun coloring, as much as the drawing process. Additionally, you can use a marker to highlight the outer edges of the snowflake. This will enhance the contrast and make the snowflake stand out even more.
Great Job
We’ve successfully drawn and colored our snowflakes. This guide was designed to help you create a beautiful snowflake from start to finish, including sketching and adding color.
I hope you had fun while following both the drawing and coloring process. If you found this tutorial helpful, please leave a comment below. We’d also love to hear your suggestions for future tutorials or any feedback on this one. Hope to see you soon with another drawing.
