The graduation hat also known as a square academic cap, graduate cap, mortarboard, or Oxford cap, is a symbol of academic achievement. In today’s tutorial, we will learn how you can draw a graduation hat.
In this tutorial, we will provide step-by-step instructions for drawing a graduation hat designed especially for kids and beginners. After we graduate, we attend graduation ceremonies and we need to wear the graduation hat that we throw in the sky on the celebration of graduation.

Steps To Draw A Graduation Hat
We aim to keep our tutorial simple. You can find a brief demo in the image below, and detailed step-by-step instructions are provided further.
Step 1: Draw Diagonal Lines
We’ll begin by drawing the top of the graduation hat. Draw two lines connected at one end as shown in the image above. Feel free to use a ruler for precision, but for a more natural and realistic look, we’re using freehand drawing.
Step 2: Draw Complete Square
Now, complete the drawing by adding two more lines connected forming a perfect square as shown in the image above. Then, draw diagonally crossed lines roughly. For a more realistic drawing, you can use a scale for the diagonal lines.
Step 3: Draw Bulky Part
Now, draw two thicker lines as shown in the image above. Begin by drawing small lines from the three points and then connect them to create two lines. This forms the top of the graduation hat. While you can use a scale for precision, we’re using freehand drawing for a more realistic look.
Step 4: Draw Two Parallel Lines
Now, from the center of the two lines, draw a slightly parallel line as shown in the image above. You can use a scale for precision, but for a more realistic drawing, we’re using freehand drawing.
Step 5: Complete Hat’s Crown Part
Now, connect both lines drawn in the previous step with a curved line as shown in the image above. This completes the drawing of the crown part of the graduation hat.
Step 6: Draw Circle
Next, draw a circle at the top of the hat positioned at the center of the diagonal cut as shown in the image above. Utilize the rough lines that were drawn earlier as a guide.
Step 7: Draw Strip in Hat
Next, draw a rectangular strip representing the hat’s rope line as shown in the image above. Draw two lines extending from the center and curve them at the top point of the hat. Then, draw small lines between those two lines to create the appearance of a strip.
Step 8: Draw Hat Tail
As we know, a graduation hat has a tassel at the top. Now, draw a circular point at the rectangular strip and then draw the tail of the graduation cap as shown in the image above. While drawing, create a pointed tail with a shape resembling fingers.
Step 9: Erase Rough Lines
We have just completed drawing the graduation hat. Now, erase all the rough lines that were drawn in the previous steps. Finally, we have a beautiful graduation hat with a strip.
Coloring a Graduation Hat
After completing the drawing of the graduation hat, let’s move forward with coloring. We have chosen some basic colors.
Since graduation hats are typically black, fill the hat with a black color during coloring. For the strip and tail part, fill in the yellow color. Feel free to choose colors according to your preference as well.
Colour Details:
- Black
- Yellow
After coloring, we get a realistic graduation hat. You can use a pencil color (we made it digital).
