Dragonflies are interesting insects known for their striking appearance and surprising flying skills. In today’s tutorial, we are going to draw a cute dragonfly.
Dragonflies have huge, complex eyes that give them almost 360-degree vision, which is urgent for recognizing development while hunting. They are normally found close to freshwater territories like lakes, waterways, and wetlands because their fairies are amphibians. Begin the steps below to get a clear and perfect drawing of a cartoon version of a dragonfly.

Steps To Draw A Dragonfly
Here we have a quick demonstration of today’s tutorial. This drawing guide is designed for both beginners and experienced artists, so anyone will be able to sketch using the simple steps given below. Follow the step-by-step guide to draw a dragonfly.
Step 1: Sketch Two Rough Circles
Draw two reference circles that are connected to represent the head and thorax. Considering that this is only a rough sketch, we use a pencil to draw these reference lines as an initial approach.
Step 2: Outline The Abdomen
Next, draw a slightly curved line extending from the thorax to represent the abdomen roughly.
Step 3: Sketch The Head
Then, using the rough circle from the first step, outline the head and make a v-shape downward. This will help us later sketch the dragonfly’s mouth. We use a black marker for sketching the fair part of the dragonfly.
Step 4: Draw Thorax
Use the rough circle to outline the thorax of the dragonfly. Ensure your final outline is darker than the rough line you made for a clear picture. So better to use a black marker or a pen to outline.
Step 5: Completely Draw Abdomen
As in the steps above, use the rough line to sketch a clear line for the abdomen. Slightly create a curved space from the right side, as shown in the image above, to make it more natural.
Step 6: Make a Wing
Outline a thin, oval-shaped line on the side of the thorax to represent the wing. Follow the steps as shown in the picture above to get the perfect place to add the wing.
Step 7: Second Wing
In the same way, draw another wing somehow overlapping the first one. The second wing needs to be smaller than the first one.
Step 8: Upper Wing
Again, with the same pattern, draw a wing smaller than the one above. You can draw this from the side of the head.
Step 9: Fourth And Final Wing
Draw the last wing, covering from the past one. This should be somewhat bigger than the previous one. Look at the picture we have attached above to get a clear vision of the guide.
Step 10: Add Legs
Sketch three legs from the right side, all attached to the thorax. Position them in such a way that the front legs are pointing forward and downward, the centre legs straight down, and the back legs in reverse and downwards.
Step 11: Complete Drawing Legs
Following the same process again, draw two legs from the back side of the thorax. Add the thin line in the middle of the legs for extra texture.
Step 12: Erase The Extra Outline
Erase unnecessary sketches and refine the shapes to make them look more natural and proportionate.
Step 13: Add Texture To Wings
Add light shading to give depth and dimension to the wings. You can see the image to add that texture, or you can add some different touches of your own choice.
Step 14: Complete With Facial Features
Draw two huge ovals, practically covering the head. Dragonfly eyes are compound and occupy the greater part of the room on the head, so these ovals ought to be very huge compared with the size of the head. Add a small pattern inside the oval shape for eyelids.
Sketch a small, simple line or slightly curved rectangle for the mouth. Also, add a c-shaped inside the mouth to represent the tongue.
Coloring a Dragonfly
After completing sketching the dragonfly, let’s start coloring it and making it more cheerful. For coloring, we have used basic pencil colors; you can use any of your preferences.
Since the dragonfly is naturally green, we have used different shades of green to make it look dynamic and realistic.
Color Details:
- Blue
- Sky Blue
- Green
- Dark Green
- Pink
- Maroon
We’ve colored the eyes a light blue color. The maroon color is used inside the mouth, and pink is used for the tongue. Sky Blue has also been used in the wings of it, where we have used silver for the texture. We have used green color in the head and body parts and dark green color in between the textures of the abdomen.
After coloring, you get a cute and smiley dragonfly. We have used pencil colors; you can use any of your preferences.
